BlackRoad Pixel City - Isometric View Update v2.3

🎮 Isometric 3D Perspective

The game now features isometric projection - a 3D-like angled view similar to classic games like:

  • Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal (some areas)
  • SimCity 2000
  • Age of Empires
  • Civilization II
  • Habbo Hotel

What Changed

Isometric Grid System

  • Diamond-shaped tiles instead of square tiles
  • 2:1 ratio - tiles are twice as wide as they are tall
  • Grid coordinates converted from cartesian (x, y) to isometric projection
  • Depth sorting - entities drawn back-to-front for proper occlusion

Building Rendering

  • 3D cubes with three visible faces (top, left, right)
  • Face shading - each face has different color intensity
    • Top face: brightest (full color)
    • Right face: medium (color - 20)
    • Left face: darkest (color - 40)
  • Roofs - additional cubes on top with pyramid shape
  • Details - doors and signs positioned on front faces

Ground Tiles

  • 64x32 pixel tiles in isometric diamond shape
  • Alternating colors for grass (GRASS_GREEN / DARK_GRASS)
  • Outlined tiles with GRASS_DARK borders
  • 20x20 tile grid covering the play area

Road System

  • Isometric road tiles in ROAD_GRAY
  • Positioned in grid (rows 8-12, cols 5-15 for main road)
  • Outlined with ROAD_DARK borders
  • Can be expanded to create complex road networks

Render Ordering

  • Depth sorting - all entities sorted by (x + y) coordinate
  • Back-to-front rendering prevents visual artifacts
  • Z-order - objects further back drawn first, closer ones overlap

🎨 Technical Implementation

Isometric Utility Functions

# Convert cartesian to isometric
cart_to_iso(x, y):
    iso_x = (x - y)
    iso_y = (x + y) / 2

# Draw isometric tile (diamond)
draw_iso_tile(surface, x, y, width, height, color, outline)

# Draw isometric cube (3 faces)
draw_iso_cube(surface, x, y, width, height, depth,
              top_color, left_color, right_color)

# Get render priority
get_render_order(x, y):
    return x + y  # Higher = drawn later (closer)

Building Structure

Each building is now a 3D isometric cube:

  • Main body: cube_width x cube_depth x cube_height (50px tall)
  • Roof: slightly larger cube on top (15px tall)
  • Three visible faces with shading
  • Door on front-right face
  • Special details (Pokeball sign for Pokemon Center)

Tile Grid Layout

Grid: 20x20 tiles
Tile size: 64x32 (isometric diamond)
Start position: (400, 50) - center top
Pattern: Alternating grass colors for texture

Depth Sorting Algorithm

all_entities = [grass, trees, buildings, pokemon, npcs, player]
all_entities.sort(key=lambda e: e.y + e.x)
for entity in all_entities:
    entity.draw(screen)

🎯 Visual Benefits

Before (Top-Down)

  • Flat 2D view
  • No depth perception
  • Hard to see spatial relationships
  • Buildings look like flat rectangles

After (Isometric)

  • 3D-like depth and height
  • Clear spatial relationships
  • Buildings have volume (cubes)
  • Professional game look
  • Better visual hierarchy
  • More engaging perspective

🚀 How to Run

cd blackroad-pixel-city
./run.sh

Controls (Same as Before)

  • Arrow Keys / WASD - Move player
  • ESC - Quit
  • F - Toggle FPS
  • SPACE - Spawn Pokemon
  • P - View Pokedex
  • T - View team

📐 Mathematics

Isometric Projection Formula

For a point at cartesian (x, y):

iso_x = (x - y) * tile_width / 2
iso_y = (x + y) * tile_height / 2

Reverse (Isometric to Cartesian)

x = (iso_x / (tile_width / 2) + iso_y / (tile_height / 2)) / 2
y = (iso_y / (tile_height / 2) - iso_x / (tile_width / 2)) / 2

Depth Sorting Key

render_priority = entity.x + entity.y

Objects with higher priority are drawn later (appear in front).

🎨 Color Shading System

Face Shading for 3D Effect

# Original color
base_color = (100, 150, 200)

# Top face (brightest)
top_color = base_color  # (100, 150, 200)

# Right face (medium)
right_color = (80, 130, 180)  # base - 20

# Left face (darkest)
left_color = (60, 110, 160)  # base - 40

This creates the illusion of light coming from top-right.

📊 Performance

Optimizations

  • Tiles drawn once (no animation needed)
  • Depth sorting done once per frame (~50 entities)
  • Simple polygon drawing (hardware accelerated)
  • No complex 3D calculations (pure 2D projection)

Frame Rate

  • Target: 60 FPS
  • Achievable on modern hardware
  • Minimal CPU usage (< 10%)

🔮 Future Enhancements

Potential Additions

  1. Multi-level buildings - taller structures with more cube layers
  2. Terrain elevation - hills and valleys with different tile heights
  3. Water tiles - animated isometric water with waves
  4. Trees in isometric - 3D tree sprites with depth
  5. NPCs in isometric - character sprites with proper feet positioning
  6. Pokemon in isometric - angled sprites matching perspective
  7. Shadows - cast shadows from buildings and characters
  8. Particle effects - isometric-aware particles
  9. Camera rotation - rotate view 90° for different angles
  10. Zoom levels - scale entire isometric view
